Why are these CAN DOs so Special? And, why
have we been blessed to operate them?
Over the years, perhaps 20 or more now, we’ve
had 3-4 each and every year. And, we have yet to have one that was a dud. We’ve
had them in the West (where we once lived), in the Midwest (where we never
lived), and the East (where we once lived), and the South (where we now live).
Where were they best received? They were "best received” where ever we had
That’s not a cop out. Every one of them had
their "specialness”. But, they were all based on a common theme
"inclusiveness”. We preach "maximum practicable utilization of firms owned by
socially and economically disadvantaged individuals”. Folk have placed the
formal title, "Diversity” on this habit that we try to make universal.
This upcoming CAN DO in Las Vegas is entitled
High Speed Rail & Diversity. It will concentrate on High Speed Rail in
general and XpressWest Rail in particular. But, expect it to cover things like
the SBA 8(A) Program. And, the Mentor/Protégé Programs at DoD, DOT, and SBA.
You see "Inclusiveness” involves "capability”
and "capacity”. Goals can be set, but they cannot be met, if there is not ample
numbers of "firms owned by socially and economically disadvantaged individuals”.
And, from experience we have determined that there is often a scarcity of such
firms that are ready willing and able. Why is that? Well, often it has to do
with folk in the community not being aware what is available to them.
We will have folk from SBA, UNLV and other
organizations who will address that need. In addition, we will have SDBs (Small
Disadvantaged Businesses) on the program and in the audience who will address
the issue. We will talk about "building capacity”, "access to capital” and other
things that some try to talk about but never seem to get it across to the
participants. Why is that?
To us at NASDB it is simple. We talk with
people, not "at” them. Our CAN DOs are a participatory experience. We don’t
lecture. If you’ve been to one of our CAN DOs, then you already know. If you’re
just coming to your first CAN DO, then, you’ll soon find out.
See you in Vegas, May 23rd……
